Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2008

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper presents computational fluid dynamics models of UV disinfection systems for watertreatment. Hydraulic, radiation, and dose-response models are used to elucidate importantfeatures, processes, and parameters that impact the simulated performance of UV reactors.Sensitivity analyses are presented that investigate the impact of different particle tracking modelsand parameters. Results show that discrete random walk models can be impacted by systemconditions such as flow rate and model parameters such as the number of particles injected. Theimpact of wall reflection on radiative transfer within the reactor is also investigated, and resultsshow that wall reflection can significantly increase the simulated dose in water with high UVtransmittance. Evaluation of different pipe configurations and their impact on the simulatedapproach hydraulics and system performance is also investigated. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
