Techniques for the Simultaneous Control of Manganese and Disinfection Byproducts at Conventional Water Treatment Facilities
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Toccoa (Georgia) Water Treatment Facility (WTF) operational staff and CH2M HILL conducted a series of bench scale tests at theCity of Toccoa WTF in order to evaluate different oxidation methods for the control of iron andmanganese at the facility. In particular, the effectiveness of three pre-oxidant chemicals -chlorine, chlorine dioxide, and potassium permanganate – was investigated under conditionssimulating full-scale operating conditions at the facility. Based on the results of these benchscale tests, full-scale testing at the City of Toccoa WTF was then conducted to assess the impacton manganese concentrations and disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potential. This paper presents the resultsof the bench scale and full-scale testing and outlines the recommend operational strategy for thecontrol of iron and manganese in the finished water while also minimizing the production ofDBPs. Includes tables.
