Comparison of Methods for the Determination of THMs and Others DBPs in Drinking Water
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

An investigation was conducted to compare two approaches for water sampling andtwo analytical methods for trihalomethane (THM) determination in drinking water. Results of thisstudy showed that the sampling protocol is critical for accurate THM determination.Samples collected for THM analysis should be adjusted to pH 4.5 or lower at thetime of sampling to preserve stability of trihalomethanes. More THMs were formedafter sampling in non pH-adjusted samples. The differences were more significantfor samples collected at the plant than in the distribution system. The analyticalmethod (liquid-liquid extraction or Purge and Trap) did not affect the quantificationof THMs in pH-adjusted samples. This study reinforces the need for standardizationof sampling protocols to prevent inaccurate determination of THMs and otherdisinfection byproducts in drinking water. Includes 12 references, tables, figures.
