Analysis of Hydrazine in Water by Derivatization and GC/MS/MS
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/15/2004

Document Format: PDF

Description

Hydrazine is used extensively in the aerospace industry and generallymanufactured by reacting chloramines (formed by combining chlorine with ammonia)with excess ammonia. It is therefore conceivable that hydrazine may be formed as a byproductfrom chloramination of drinking water and wastewater. Method developmentwork for hydrazine analysis in water was carried out to achieve low ng/L detection levelsthat are more relevant to the water industry. Gas chromatography (GC) combined withmass spectrometry (MS)/MS operated under the chemical ionization (CI) mode offeredbetter selectivity and sensitivity than previous analytical methods. Backgroundinterference was minimized by reducing the amount of acetone used in the derivatizationprocedure. D6-NDMA was used as an internal standard to compensate for variations inextraction efficiency and instrument sensitivity. A method detection limit (MDL) of3.6 ng/L was achieved for hydrazine. Includes 5 references, tables, figures.
