Development of Low Cost Method(s) for NDMA Analysis: Round-Robin Testing
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/15/2004

Document Format: PDF

Description

The purpose of this project was to refine, develop, and evaluate multiple methods for Nnitrosodimethylamine(NDMA) analysis, and where applicable, determine how well these methods are able todetect other nitrosamines. The methods examined in this study are derivations or refinements of existingmethods and included liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) and solid-phase extraction (SPE). This work was performedas part a larger project funded by the WateReuse Foundation, entitled “Low Cost Analytical Methods forMeasuring NDMA Concentrations.” A goal of this project was to evaluate the capabilities of multiple methodsfor a variety of water matrices, including ones that test the durability of the methods and not just the ones thatcan achieve the required detection level anticipated for drinking waters (e.g.< 2 ng/L). It was found through theround-robin testing that the Ambersorb® 572-Envicarb (Amb-Envi) cartridge SPE, Ambersorb® 572 SPE (AmbSPE), and the traditional LLE methods were all able to report NDMA to a level of approximately 2 ng/L, andother nitrosamines to a level of between 2 to 4 ng/L across a broad range of sample matrices. The micro-LLEtechnique developed in this study, which uses a sample volume of 100 mL, also appears to be effective atanalyzing a broad range of sample matrices, although the reporting level for this method is higher than the othermethods (7 ng/L for NDMA, 5 to 12 ng/L for the other nitrosamines). Additionally, while NDMA was the onlynitrosamine analyzed in detectable concentrations in potable water and tertiary wastewater effluent treatedthrough reverse osmosis membranes, the two wastewater treatment plant effluent samples (secondary andtertiary effluent) contained detectable concentrations of nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA), nitrosopyrrolidine(NPYR), nitrosomorpholine (NMOR), nitrosopiperidine (NPIP), and nitrosodi-n-butylamine (NDBA). Includes 5 references, tables, figures, appendix.
