The Development of Granular Ferric Media-Arsenic Removal and Additional Uses in Water Treatment
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2000

Document Format: PDF

Description

Severn Trent Water must install arsenic removal processesat 17 groundwater sites in the United Kingdom in order to comply with the new regulatory standard of 10 ug/L by 2003. An extensive development program commenced in 1995, including laboratory and pilot-scale trials. Adsorption with granular ferric media was found to be the best technology for treating groundwater in Severn Trent. The first full-scale arsenic adsorption plant in the United Kingdom was constructed in 1999, allowing further process optimization. Other applications for granular ferric media have been investigated, including simultaneous removal of iron by filtration with arsenic adsorption, the feasibility of Point-of-Use devices, the ability to remove toxic heavy metals and treat concentrated waste material. Includes 9 references, figures.
