Evaluating Wastewater Reuse for a Proposed Mixed-Use Development
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2002

Document Format: PDF

Description

Many countries have embraced the practice of wastewater reuse through slow-rate land application of pretreated wastewater effluent to recharge surficial aquifers. This method of water resources management has proved successful in many areas to help maintain local water supply needs, both safely and effectively. This paper focuses on a proposed mixed-use development that completed a wastewater management feasibility study (WMFS) to develop an approach for implementing a wastewater reuse program at their site. The primary goal of the WMFS was to develop conceptual design criteria compatible with the intended land use, and to estimate costs for the wastewater treatment and effluent disposal facilities. Based on the established design criteria and phased development plan, the WMFS identified land area requirements, budgetary construction and O&M costs, and a user rate structure for the phased implementation of the proposed wastewater facilities over the 30-year build-out period. Includes tables.
