A Comparison of USEPA Approved Enzyme-based Total Coliform/E. coli Tests for Groundwater Monitoring
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a study with the objectives of:determining the capabilities of each product todetect total coliform and E. coli in threechemically diverse Wisconsin groundwaters;determining the ability of each product toaccurately quantify the number of total coliformsand E. coli in Wisconsin groundwaters;determining the ability of each test to suppressAeromonas spp.; and, determine the unit cost per test. Chemical analysis was conducted eachtime a collection was made from each site, andanalysis was done for alkalinity, pH, hardness, conductivity and soluble iron content. Chemical characteristics of thegroundwater sampling sites are given. Elements of the project design are outlined and include: each site was sampled twice, once for the total coliform detection objectives andonce for Aeromonas spp. suppression experiments;samples were dispensed and spiked with five totalcoliforms separately at two different levels ofcontamination, and each was spiked in triplicate for the totalcoliform objectives; and,the Aeromonas spp. objectives consisted ofdispensing 100mL samples and spiking with six differentcontamination levels of two different strains ofAeromonas spp. in triplicate. Results indicated that:some methods were unable to detect certainspecies of total coliform from groundwatersources;major differences were seen in the ability ofeach test to quantify amounts of total coliformand E. coli; and, vast dissimilarities were seen between methodsand strains to suppress Aeromonas spp. The presentation goes on to outline these discussion points:some methods were unable to detect certainspecies of total coliform in Wisconsingroundwaters;major differences were seen in the ability ofeach test to quantify amounts of total coliformand E. coli; and, vast dissimilarities were seen between methodsand strains to suppress Aeromonas spp.. Includes tables, figures.
