Improved Microextraction Procedure for the Analysis of HAAs
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

The proposed Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule (D/DBPR) includes maximum contaminant levels for total trihalomethanes and the sum of five haloacetic acids (HAAs). The EPA has recommended Method 552.2 for the analysis of HAAs. This method employs microextraction and derivatization with acidic methanol instead of methylation with very toxic diazomethane. There is, however, significant variation in the methods reproducibility and accuracy among different agencies due to the difficulty of derivatization with acidic methanol and evaporation of the MTBE extract. This work was undertaken to optimize the microextraction procedure using acidic methanol derivatization. The study compared the efficiency and reliability of EPA Methods 552, 552.1 and 552.2 for monitoring HAAs from groundwater, reclaimed water and surface water.
