Evaluation of Temperature and System Conditions on DBP Formation in Surface Water Using the Rapid Bench Scale Membrane Test for ICR Treatment Studies
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1997

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Information Collection Rule (ICR) will require some public water supplies to conduct disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursor removal studies, the objective of which is to provide the EPA with cost and performance data using either membrane processes or granular activated carbon (GAC). The ICR Manual for Bench and Pilot Scale Treatment Studies states that the treatment study feed water collected for the Rapid Bench Scale Membrane Test (RBSMT) must be representative of the source under investigation. Since many of the analytes are in EPA methods that require immediate cooling of the sample to 4 degrees C, sample transportation in a temperature-controlled environment would be necessary. This study examined the effects of sample transportation temperature on the integrity of source water used in the RBSMT treatment studies and compared the DBPs formed under actual plant conditions (simulated distribution system conditions) and those formed under the standard uniform formation conditions.
