Evaluation of MF/UF Technology on the Nooksack River for Drinking Water Production
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2009

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Nooksack River in northwestern Washington State is a drinking water source for 18 watersystems including Bellingham, Lynden, Ferndale, and the South Shore Water System. As part ofthe work to upgrade and plan for future expansion of the existing 4 mgd conventional surfacewater plant, the City of Lynden, Washington, and Carollo Engineers conducted a pilot study toevaluate the feasibility of treating Nooksack River water with microfiltration (MF) andultrafiltration (UF).The study focused on demonstrating the feasibility of operating membrane systems oncoagulated water and then on clarified water. Direct filtration of coagulated water can presentsignificant cost savings; however, treating cold, high turbidity water in this manner also presentsprocess risks. This paper discusses the use of “tools” that are available to maintain production ofmembrane systems under challenging water quality events. Includes tables, figures.
