Pilot Scale Evaluation of Membrane Filtration for Turlock Irrigation District's New Surface Water Treatment Facility
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

This slide presentation outlines a pilot scale evaluation of membrane filtration for Turlock Irrigation District’s new surface water treatment facility. The membrane pilot goals included:conduct pilot testing per U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) MembraneFiltration Guidance Manual; optimization test phase to allow membranemanufacturers to determine optimumoperating parameters;two performance evaluation tests utilizingoptimized operating parameters;demonstrate two forty-day CIP intervals;confirm filtrate quality during performanceevaluation testing; and, establish design and operating parameters forprequalification of a membrane system forparticipation in full scale procurement. Pilot objectives for water quality included:verify that membrane filtrate turbidity shall be no more than0.08 NTU in 95% of recorded values;verify that membrane filtrate turbidity shall be no more than0.1 NTU in 99% of recorded values and a maximum valueof 1 NTU; and,4-log LRV (Log Reduction Value) or 99.99 percentfiltration efficiency at or below a removal of 3 microns. Pilot objectives for operation included:demonstrate stable and reliable performance of proposedmembranes;90% recovery ratio;90% permeability;90% on line factor; 40-day CIP Interval; membrane integrity verification, direct and indirect monitoring;no more than 2 fiber breaks;determine both the quantity and quality of residuals generatedfrom the membrane products; and, experience no breaking or cracking of the hollow fiber membranepotting within the membrane module.
