Preparing for the Inevitable: A Survey of Membrane Cleaning Practices in the State of Florida
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 03/05/2003

Document Format: PDF

Description

At the heart of every membrane system is its membrane elements. The life of a system’smembrane elements will have a substantial impact on the financial feasibility forconstructing, operating, and maintaining a membrane facility. Although the life span ofmembrane elements is difficult to predict, it is possible to prepare membrane facilityoperators and maintenance personnel for eventual scaling and/or fouling of themembranes, and the associated reactions to operational changes that are appropriate. It isvery important to know when and how to clean. If cleanings are performed at the correcttime, and with the appropriate methods performance can be restored and membrane lifecan be extended. This paper discusses proper monitoring techniques that can lead toproper assessment of cleaning intervals, as well as various cleaning scenarios for varioustypes of fouling and scaling. Since there is limited collective knowledge of cleaningregimes at various membrane facilities, this paper also includes survey results frommembrane facilities in the State of Florida regarding pretreatment practices, cleaningfrequencies, cleaning practices, cleaning waste disposal methods, and average life ofmembrane elements. This paper also discusses the role of cleaning relative tomembrane warranty issues. Includes figures.
