Local government agencies that have adopted Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are finding that it is a core technology that isincreasingly driving their enterprise information management and data dissemination strategies.The primary reason is that a majority of all data used by local government is geographicallyreferenced. GIS has emerged as a key component of e-Government strategies and initiativesfor a growing number of local government agencies. This paper discusses how GIS acts as a catalyst for sharing information and integrating services withinand between many local government agencies by creating shared databases, allowing foraccess to information across departments and agencies.
