Journal AWWA – Occurrence and Co-occurrence of Perchlorate and Nitrate in California Drinking Water Sources
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 09/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

Perchlorate and nitrate are both goitrogens, i.e.,agents that can prevent the thyroid from absorbingiodide. Several environmental studies have focused onperchlorate as the sole waterborne goitrogen of publichealth concern in drinking water sources; however, anypotential goitrogenic health effects of perchlorate cannotbe understood in isolation from other waterbornegoitrogens. This research set out to determine the overalldistribution of perchlorate and nitrate in Californiadrinking water sources and investigate the co-occurrence,if any, of these goitrogens.Data from the California Department of HealthServices Division of Drinking Water and EnvironmentalMonitoring database of source water monitoringresults were analyzed. The study found thatnitrate occurred in significantly higher concentrationsthan perchlorate (and over a much broadergeographic area) and co-occurred with perchlorate.Drinking water sources that contained detectablelevels of perchlorate had, on average, much higherconcentrations of nitrates compared with othersources. This research provides insight into howwater sources can be contaminated by multiple analytessimultaneously and how to determine whetherthese contaminants share a common source or infiltrationroute. Includes 19 references, tables, figure.
