Journal AWWA – A Field Sample Concentration Method for Rapid Response to Security Incidents
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 04/01/2006

Document Format: PDF

Description

Faced with the threat of contamination and resulting publichealth consequences, the water industry needs rapid analysis ofwater samples in the field and at sufficiently low detection levels. This article describes a simple sample concentration method thatincreases the sensitivity of some rapid analytical techniques (e.g.,polymerase chain reaction, rapid immunoassay), thus allowing themto yield results of public health significance. The method permitsconcentration of bacteria, protozoans, and potentially even virusesthat could be used for intentional contamination of water supplies. This field concentration method does not require highlyskilled personnel or specialized training and can be successfullyimplemented by site characterization teams, regardless ofwhether they are composed of utility personnel, hazardousmaterial responders, or staff from state or federal agencies. Theability to analyze water samples rapidly, accurately, and atsufficiently low concentrations will allow water providers torespond more quickly and effectively to contaminationthreats.
