Removal of Cryptosporidium oocysts from drinkingwater is essential because of their potential tocause waterborne disease outbreaks. Removal is challenging,however, because of their prevalence in naturalwaters and resistance to chlorine disinfection.Detection of Cryptosporidium in drinking water samplesis expensive, slow, and frequently unreliable. Thisresearch used different-colored polystyrene microspheresto compare the performance of conventionaland biological filters in removing Cryptosporidiumoocysts. Whereas previous studies focused on thesteady-state portion of the filter run, this work lookedat removals during and immediately following filterripening. Includes 34 references, tables, figures.
