Increasingly, attention is being paid to the fact thatmany people are stretched thin, having to divide theirattention among many activities including family, relationships,and of course, work. Not only do individualshave more things to do in general but many people alsoare finding that in the workplace they are expected tofulfill the traditional demands of their job, as well asmany additional tasks. Engineers are no exception tothis trend. In this article the author expands on the ideathat most of us are not living up to our full potential,and provides suggestions for making the most of ourtime and our abilities in the face of ever-increasingexpectations and demands.Called “soft skills,” these abilities, when welldeveloped, can increase productivity and motivation,thereby enhancing employee value and improvingquality of life. Some of the skills discussed are goal-setting,time management, and prioritization. Theauthor also discusses the importance of eachemployee being well versed on the vision, mission,and purpose of their employer so that all employeescan be working toward a common goal. Through thiscollective effort all employees enjoy the benefit ofworking in a more efficient environment, which inturn reduces individual stress and increases personalproductivity.
