Description

A 1-mgd (3.8-ML/day) ion exchange plant was built in McFarland, California, to remove nitrate from well water. The plant has been performing satisfactorily in the semiautomatic mode since October 1983. Full automation of the plant was completed in June 1984. Nitrate has been reduced to less than 10 mg as nitrogen/L and brine has been eliminated from the product water. Topics addressed in the article include plant design, control, size, and brine disposal; plant operation, automation, and resin declassification; plant performance; and plant costs.
