Journal AWWA – A Zero Discharge Steam Electric Power Generating Station
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 05/01/1986

Document Format: PDF

Description

At the Pawnee Steam Electric Generation Station, located in the South Platte River Valley near Brush, Colorado, the major mechanism for reuse is vapor compression evaporation, with ultimate disposal via solar evaporation. The station achieves zero discharge in that no liquid wastes are discharged beyond the station boundaries. This has been accomplished through the application of proven design concepts, the incorporation of design conservatism and flexibility to allow modification of subsystems, alert and knowledgeable supervision by plant personnel, the maintenance of a positive engineer-client relationship, and a company wide dedication to making zero discharge a reality. Preliminary equipment design considerations relating to the zero discharge system are described, as well as equipment and system modifications, equipment and system operation, and wastewater collection system modifications. Includes 3 references, tables, figures.
