The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has effectively demonstrated the value of scuba diving for studying and solving water quality problems. This article describes the origins of the scuba diving program at Metropolitan, safety and training, equipment, and sampling locations and monitoring methods. Metropolitan’s scuba diving program has been effective in determining the source and nature of taste and odor problems in Lake Mathews, for monitoring, inspecting, and cleaning outlet structure screens that are prone to clogging in the San Joaquin Reservoir, and for evaluating the effect of various algicides applied to water. The cost-effectiveness of scuba programs and other potential applications for scuba in the water industry are discussed. Includes 9 references, table, figures.
