Journal AWWA – Field Monitoring of Chrysotile Asbestos in California Waters
Journal Article by American Water Works Association, 03/01/1984

Document Format: PDF

Description

Asbestos contamination of California drinking water is being closely monitored. Preliminary results show that there are large fiber concentrations in surface waters whose watersheds include serpentine rock, as well as asbestos in groundwater recharged through serpentine rock. These findings do vary with the seasons. Water treatment has provided varying degrees of success in removing asbestos fibers. The monitoring has shown that the problem is more widespread than previously believed and that optimizing treatment improves asbestos removal. Attempts to correlate asbestos concentrations with turbidity worked well in only a few cases. Includes 29 references, tables, figures.
