MAST (Mobile Advanced Step Testing), a New and Innovative Approach to the Long Established Step Testing Leak Detection Method
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1993

Document Format: PDF

Description

District measurements and step testing (that is, localizing leaks based on valve closures throughout the district) have long been established as the most accurate means of identifying and localizing hidden leakage. However, they have frequently been considered impractical because of high manpower costs, inefficiencies, and disruptions of customers. Leak localizing is a most important element of a cost effective strategy for leakage control. This phase of the program confirms the approximate area where leakage exists with minimum manpower and time. Efficient leak localization procedures ensure that leak location and repair teams are most efficiently controlled and directed. It is the author’s opinion that the Mobile Advanced Step Tester (MAST) developed by Reten Acoustics, Cwmbran, Gwent, U.K., overcomes the disadvantages of current step testing procedures and provides the quickest and easiest means of localizing and quantifying areas of waste. With the use of this system, district measurements and step testing can again become the most effective and economical method in a comprehensive leakage control program. This paper describes conventional step test procedures and then lists that advantages of the MAST system.
