Mountainous Low Power Radio Telemetry Without a Radio Repeater
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

Many water distribution systems located in mountainous or hilly terrain can in fact install and obtain licenses from the FCC allowing cost effective radio telemetry and remote control of their distribution network. Conducting a computer analysis using USGS topographical data available on CD-ROM can yield reasonable results to predict and anticipate field problems and give a system integrator the necessary confidence to implement radio telemetry using peer-to-peer radio techniques avoiding costly repeaters, towers, additional unexpected hardware & communications software, not to mention significant project delays. Additional benefits are being realized by the inherently more fail safe nature of peer-to-peer vs. a single point of failure radio system involving a repeater. The small community of Mountain City, Tennessee, has been realizing numerous excellent benefits from their low cost radio telemetry system.
