Description

In early 1983, the City of Shreveport Department of Water & Sewer investigated the need for computers. Then in 1984, the Engineering Division installed the first Computer Aided Drafting & Design systems. The results affected a large portion of the operation with significant gains. The Engineering’s drafting section increased production by 30% the first year without an increase in Personnel. In fact, to this date, this drafting section that had five drafters in 1983, now has four drafters with no loss in production. With the success of that system, other computers were installed at other divisions. In late 1985, the field meter reading procedures were automated. This allowed faster, more efficient interfaces with the Data Processing Department’s accounting systems. In 1986, the Water Purification Division received SCADA systems technology. Next, systems such as the Warehouse Inventory Systems, Water & Wastewater Process Monitoring & Report systems, Industrial Pollutant Monitoring, and Plant Maintenance Management packages were installed by the end of 1988. Word Processing, Database, Spreadsheets, etc. have been installed at the rest of the Departmental Divisions. December of 1992, phase one of a three-phase multi departmental Engineering, AM/FM, GIS Mapping System was completed, and a major upgrade to the CADD operations now into its ninth year of operations. Wastewater SCADA systems have been installed and should be in operation by mid 1994.
