Water Applications in a GIS
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

While a Geographic Information System (GIS) is a great tool for managing graphic and nongraphic information, it typically is not directly linked with water system applications. Many water distribution system applications do not, however, display their results in a graphical manner. Extending the GIS by adding hydraulic modeling capabilities can provide the best of both worlds. In the project described in this paper, an Intergraphic MicroStation water distribution systems GIS was created for the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base using an Informix database. The GIS was then linked with KYPIPE to automate the modeling process. Among the benefits derived from this project were: automation of water systems maps; automation of water system data; integration of modeling with the maps and data; storage and updating of water quality data; and graphical display of modeling results.
