Universal Operator Interface Replaces a Maze of Individual Terminals
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper describes a way of providing terminal access to a variety of computer systems by using standard workstation hardware and software. By avoiding custom development, most of the cost and risk usually associated with that approach is avoided. This paper describes an approach to solving this problem by using a workstation to replace the multiple individual terminals, resulting in a Universal Operator Interface (UOI). The guiding principle is to make extensive use of standard hardware and software. By using the windowing features of the workstation, not only can the number of physical terminals be reduced but it becomes a simple matter to interface with other computer systems that are added in the future. This technical solution also provides additional benefits and opportunities not previously possible with individual terminals.
