Programmable Controller and Distributed Control Systems–A Comparison
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1992

Document Format: PDF

Description

The two types of digital control systems most frequently used in water treatment plants are programmable controllers and distributed control systems. Programmable controllers have now been in use for more than 20 years, and distributed control systems for more than 15 years. The hundreds of related products available today span a wide range of capabilities. In fact, programmable controllers and distributed control systems have developed to the point where it has become difficult to differentiate between the two systems. This paper compares these two types of control systems and help clarify the distinctions between them. However, programmable controller systems and distributed control systems have become so popular over such a wide range of industries that it is difficult to make an “advantages and disadvantages” type of comparison. A feature that may be an advantage for one project may be a disadvantage for a different project. For this reason, this paper concentrates on similarities and differences rather than advantages and disadvantages.
