Two Successful Years of Automated Mapping with PCs
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1991

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Indianapolis Water Company, Indiana, is implementing an in-house geographic information system (GIS) using personal computers. All of the existing mapping systems will be incorporated into the new GIS, and many new applications will be integrated to form a complete automated mapping/facilities management system (AM/FM). This system will cost just $3.50 per customer (not including labor costs). This paper reviews the setting of the Indianapolis Water Company, the base map details, hardware and software, base map translation, and mapping priorities. Map making for 1988-1990 involved meter maps, distribution maps, plotting maps, and adding intelligence (FM) to maps; each of these processes is briefly discussed. Future improvements will include base map extension, adding “what if” capability, on-line access to maps, capability to handle ad-hoc queries, integrating existing applications, and improving efficiency in other areas.
