Alexis WTP Upgrade Project (SCADA – When You Can't Be Two Places at Once)
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

In 1996, both trihalomethane (THM) and turbidity concerns were identified which prompted an upgrade of the Alexis First Nations water treatment facility. A new surface water treatment facility was constructed in response to the concerns. The treatment comprises a 150 USgpm package plant operated in series with two manganese greensand pressure filters and a GAC pressure filter. A unique aspect of the project is the degree of control and instrumentation incorporated into the plant. The installation of on-line turbidimeters, pH meters, a chlorine residual analyser, and chemical solution tank level sensors allows plant operations to be monitored remotely by the operator using a laptop computer and mode. This has been of tremendous benefit to the operator since he is responsible for several other water supply and treatment facilities in the area. This paper reviews the project history, design features, winter construction challenges and the unique control, instrumentation and monitoring features of this small water treatment facility.
