Successful Use of Alternative Technology on the Hoopa Indian Reservation
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1999

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper presents the advantages of applying approved alternative treatment technology to solve multiple water treatment deficiencies and design challenges in an economical manner at the Hoopa Valley Public Utilities District in Northern California. Two options for upgrading the treatment facility were to build a new plant (pressure or gravity filtraiton) or to retrofit the existing used pressure filters. The District decided to construct a new plant, due to the age and conditions of the existing filters and their location. A discussion of direct filtration, conventional filtration, and gravity filtration is presented and several pilot tests are described. The plant design chosen centered around the Culligan Multi-Tech system model MT-84/108. A brief description of the design elements and the problems solved by each is included. Plant costs and construction costs are listed.
