Full-Scale Comparison of Alum and Ferric Chloride
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Alameda County Water District operates a 28 mgd surface water treatment facility in Fremont, California. This plant has been in operation since September 1993, and has the capability of being split into two identical, parallel process trains for testing purposes. This paper describes a head-to-head comparison of two primary coagulants: liquid aluminum sulfate and liquid ferric chloride. This study compared the performance of two coagulants based on several factors including: achieving enhanced coagulation (TOC) removal; minimizing solids production; achieving arsenic removal; minimizing the production of residual aluminum and /or iron levels; optimizing filter efficiency; minimizing costs; and other plant operational factors.
