Zebra Mussel Update: Where Are They Now and What Are We Doing About It?
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper presents up to the minute data on the extent of zebra mussel infestation in North America. The history of infestation is briefly reviewed, from the initial inoculation in Lake St. Clair to the most recent sightings. Strategies for prevention of infestation of surface water plant facilities are described–what has been tried, what methods have been successful and which methods have failed. Additional details are provided on those methods most commonly used and promising new methods. Because of the rapidity and extent of zebra mussel infestation, this is no longer a problem solely of the Great Lakes region. As one headline read, “Zebra mussels, coming soon to an intake near you.” It is critical that water professionals operating surface water supplies be prepared. The paper is based upon the author’s experience with the investigation and design of over 30 zebra mussel control projects on both lakes and rivers. Many of these systems have been constructed and successfully operating for several years.
