Solids Contact Clarifiers for Enhanced Coagulation: Two Piloting and Design Experiences
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper describes two pilot studies that were undertaken to develop treatment alternatives and design recommendations for two utilities that were interested in comparing conventional treatment including tube settlers with solids contact clarifiers (SSCs). The first study was conducted at Ogden, Utah, on the Pine View Reservoir supply and the second study was conducted at the Boise River supply in Boise, Idaho. Enhanced coagulation was required to continue using free chlorine as a residual disinfectant in the distribution systems and meet the THM Rule and the proposed D/DBP Rule. The results of these studies and the full scale operations have indicated that the solids contact clarifiers outperformed the conventional settlers in terms of water quality and loading rates. The Superpulsator type design for Boise, Idaho, and the flat bottom clarifier retrofit at Ogden were chosen as the unit design for their respective projects. The Ogden study compared the flat bottom and Superpulsator pilots to the existing conventional plant with tube settlers added and the Boise study compared the Superpulsator pilot work to the existing plant performance.
