Pilot Scale Evaluation of Residuals Management Options
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1995

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) is evaluating filtration and non-filtration treatment options for a new water treatment facility that will serve the metropolitan Boston area. Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) is operating a demonstration plant with four treatment trains to investigate alternative treatment methods for the proposed facility. One component of the demonstration plant protocols and water quality sampling plans is to evaluate residuals management options. Water Research Center (WRc) conducted the pilot scale testing program of residuals treatment and disposal options. The quantity and quality of water treatment residuals is an important aspect in the design and operation of a large full-scale facility. Through pilot testing various residuals treatment methods in conjunction with demonstration plant operation, it is possible to characterize residuals produced and develop design criteria for cost-effective residual facilities and reuse or disposal options. This pilot scale residuals testing program was able to meet the research objectives of characterization of residuals streams, evaluation of alternative dewatering options and assessment of ultimate disposal options. This program was also able to conduct a comparison between residuals generated using alum and polyaluminum chloride as coagulants which will be important in the design of residuals facilities and reuse or disposal options.
