THM Control Inside a Mixed Media Filter
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1994

Document Format: PDF

Description

The treatment plant process data from the existing facility demonstrate that few alternatives are available to accommodate the existing (or future) THM criteria. At Robbins, the filtered water in route to the clearwell can contain the allowable 100 ug/l which clearly shows that no common treatment to the finished water will improve the THM situation and the use of chloramines will be ineffective. The remaining alternatives included chlorine dioxide, ozone and membrane filtration. All the alternatives are expensive and should not be considered prior to the D/DBP Rule promulgation. The apparent reaction within the filters probably can be controlled by a thorough acid cleaning. When the filtered water (clearwell input) value is in the range of 20 ug/l to 30 ug/l, then the finished water (clearwell output) should be less than 40 ug/l. At that point ammonia can be added to form chloramines which will stop additional THM production in the distribution system. The total system should then be in THM and SWTR compliance.
