Two New Wells Yield 35 mgd: Lincoln's Wellfield Expansion
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1994

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper describes the expansion of the well water supply for Lincoln, Nebraska. Historically, water demands have been met from local wells spread throughout the city and from the Ashland wellfield located along the Platte River approximately 30 miles from the city. The Ashland wellfield had been a reliable primary source of water supply, and had been expanded several times since 1932. In 1981, when peak day demands were approaching the capacity of the existing wells, the city retained Black & Veatch to prepare a water supply master plan. The master plan recommended that new wells be developed in one of two potential sites. A MODFLOW model of the wellfield was updated, and a comparison study was made of horizontal collector wells versus vertical wells. Hydrogeologic testing was performed for the design of the collector wells. The paper describes the pumping tests and recharge studies that were performed, and describes final installation of the wells and performance testing.
