Description
This article covers developments to improve the use of slow sand filtration. Following an account of how slow sand filters work, the author discusses pilot plants, recent developments to ease operation and maintenance (such as filter fabric and harrowing), and source water considerations (including turbidity and organics). Pretreatment by use of roughing filters and ozonation are also discussed.
