Potential for Release of Carbon Fines and Bacteria From Filter-Adsorbers
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1990

Document Format: PDF

Description

Granular activated carbon (GAC) acts as an excellent support media for microbial attachment. While biodegradation is a benefit, it is possible that bacteria are released into the filtered water either by detachment from GAC or by escape of carbon fines. Camper, et al. found that highly populated carbon fines were released from GAC beds and that the attached bacteria were protected from disinfection. This research was intended to provide quantitative evidence for the presence of carbon fines in product water through use of both pilot plant and bench- scale studies. Figures include photos of magnified activated carbon and fines.
