Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of flush toilet and pit latrine disadvantages in Bolivia. The first phase of a program to implement ecological bathrooms in San Pedro, Bolivia is presented and involved generating demand through sanitation approaches and the use of education materials. The second phase involved the design of dryer materials/fertilizer. The third phase involved construction and educating the families in hygiene procedures. The fourth phase involved post construction and cascade methodology. A subtopic presented in this same presentation is Eco San in South and CentralAmerica:Lessons from the Field. The Center for Global Safe Water is presented as an innovative partnership between academic andgovernment scientists and NGOs, creating a uniqueconcentration of expertise in water, sanitation and health. Eco San – Considerations forthe Marketplace are presented, along with the following research question:are DVUD toilets and solartoilets, as currently designed,operated and maintained, safe? Two Eco San studies in El Salvador and Bolivia are presented on microbiological safety, the association between the type ofsanitation system andintestinal infection, and increase sanitationcoverage in Bolivia.
