London's Unexpected Lead Issue
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2008

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of London’s (Ontario, Canada) Water System and a historical perspective of its lead testing and service replacement. Lead concerns in 2006 prompted a lead rehabilitation program that included a flushing program, after which sampling showed very low levels of lead in the distribution system. In response to a March 2007 Enviroworks Flyer, 82 samples were taken, with 35 results higher than thestandard ranging from 11-65 µg/L. A free vacuumexcavation at the property line to identify the servicematerial was offered; 117 people accepted the offer with the following results:103 had lead on their property; and, 14 had copper on their property but lead on City property. London Lead ScaleAnalysis is presented, along with changes at the water treatment plant, Community Lead Testing Requirements for 2007, future challenges for the city of London, and those for Ontario. Includes figures.
