This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of Ontario’s Clean Water Act. It presents information on the Great Lakes Basin context for source water protection (SWP), including: Great Lakes and impacts of urbanization; effects of wet weather flow on near-shore zone of Lake Ontario; and, pollution sources to Great Lakes near-shore. Formation of the (Western) Lake Ontario Collaborative is outlined, along with a collaborative study to protect Lake Ontario drinking water, developing Lake Ontario SWP (event/acute phenomena), development of a (western) Lake Ontario SWP plan – a municipal perspective, development of a Great Lakes Basin SWP plan, sustaining the momentum of a Great Lakes Basin SWP plan, contrast in SWP approaches in North America, evolution of the Newfoundland and Labrador Source Water ProtectionProgram – e.g. protected watersheds, assessment protocol for Great Lakes states, urban areas: the role of SWP and treatment (Toronto’s wet weather flow master plan), and perspective on source control to address risk of E.
