Developing Integrated, Long-Term Water Supply Plans through Conservation, Drought Contingency, and Variable Service Capacities
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/01/2007

Document Format: PDF

Description

This paper provides an understanding of the challenges associated with managingconsumer expectations related to shifts in climate (dry versus wet weather patterns). The effortsof two communities are reviewed to demonstrate adopted strategies to meet water supplyprojections over 50-year planning periods. Strategies of discussion include water conservationprogram promotions, the enforcement of water demand reduction policies per drought indicatormonitoring, the optimization of local supplies, and participation in regional water systems toobtain additional capacity at an affordable rate. The thought process behind an integratedapproach toward water supply management and water demand management are discussed, as arespecific steps taken by the example communities to balance water conservation and droughtcontingency planning efforts with supplemental water supply capital improvements. Throughsuccessful implementation, it is anticipated that the example communities will simultaneouslymeet projected water demands, responsibly conserve water resources, and achieve sound utilityfinancial management. Includes 9 references, tables, figures.
