Development of a Decision Tool for Siting Municipal Water Supply Wells Using GIS
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/17/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

The City of Peoria recognized the need to develop a screening-level decision toolin order to help guide the location of future water supply wells. The tool wasbased upon work originally conducted by the U.S. Environmental ProtectionAgency (Aller et. al., 1985), National Water Well Association (LeGrand, 1983)and the University of Idaho (Hill, 1988a,b) and added a more sophisticatedanalysis using a Geographic Information System (GIS). This informationincluded: location and depths of existing water supply wells; the spatially variablesubsurface geology and hydraulic characteristics; the 3-dimensional thicknessand areal extent of the aquifer; and, anticipated location of future growth anddevelopment. Exclusionary criteria were developed that eliminated lands withinthe City from further consideration, then demographic criteria were developed, ranked and weighted in order to provide a way to quantitatively compare themost suitable areas remaining in and around the City to site water supply wells. Includes 4 references, tables, figures.
