Residuals Management – A Key Factor In Arsenic Removal Technology Selection
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 06/17/2005

Document Format: PDF

Description

While evaluating technologies for implementation, Coachella Valley WaterDistrict (CVWD) in Southern California considered multiple key parametersincluding residuals management (volume, classification, administrative requirements, permittingrequirements, ease of handling, and waste treatment requirements). While not the only factor inthe selection of the appropriate treatment technology for CVWD, residuals management played akey part. The volume of waste generated for each technology evaluated (adsorptive media, coagulation/flocculation, reverse osmosis, and ion exchange) varied greatly and was largely water quality dependent. The waste streamsgenerated also had varying methods of treatment, handling, and disposal requirements. Eachtechnology evaluated offered its own set of pros and cons and based on a number of factors(including residuals management, life cycle cost, ease of operation, flexibility, water losses, andmodular constructability), the District selected ion exchange with brine minimization to provide theircustomers with safe water in compliance with revised federal arsenic MCL of 10 µg/L. Includes tables, figure.
