Accumulation and Release of Inorganics and Radionuclides in Drinking Water Distribution Systems
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 11/01/2008

Document Format: PDF

Description

This powerpoint presentation begins by providing a brief overview of the issue of accumulation and release of inorganics and radionuclides in drinking water distribution systems. Reasons for industry concerns are presented, along with evidence of arsenic accumulation, accumulation and release mechanisms, and risk factors for chemical release. Presentation conclusions indicate thatregulated trace metals and radionuclides canaccumulate to “problematic” levels even when present belowthe MCL (or undetectable) in the finished water, and canbe released as a result of hydraulic and chemical disturbances. Factors that influence accumulation and release includesource water quality and treatment applications, source usage patterns and blending, pipe materials and condition, system hydraulic conditions, and utility operational practices. The presentation provides proactive steps to assess your system. Includes figures.
