EPA 524.2 Method: Comparison Study on Current Preservation Reagents Versus Sodium Bisulfate
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/1998

Document Format: PDF

Description

The Orange County Water District (OCWD) uses EPA methodology for the monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The analysis of VOCs is a critical process in the protection of the groundwater basin and plays a significant role in our monitoring program. The District’s laboratory uses EPA methods 534.2 and 502.2 to monitor for VOC targets. The use of 1+1 HC1 as a preservative to prevent biodegradation and dehydrohalogenation is a required step for these methods. This study will investigate the effectiveness of the required preservatives and test combinations of other potential preservatives which might impact targets using EPA method 524.2. A comparison of three types of water samples were used within this study: distilled water; groundwater; and surface water. Spiked samples in these three matrices were monitored for degradation and the percent recovery of targets were compared between combinations of four different preservatives: sodium thiosulfate; sodium bisulfate; ascorbic acid; and the 1+1 HC1 solution.
