Document Format: PDF

Description

The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) provides anational forum for discussion of issues related to national laboratoryaccreditation with the goal of setting uniform standards. NELAC establishesconsensus standards voluntarily adopted by the states. A state which is approvedunder the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) grantsaccreditation to its laboratories based on the standards. To reduce the highcosts of multi-state certification and promote the generation of high quality andconsistent environmental laboratory data through a standardized nationalaccreditation, Montgomery Watson Laboratories (MWL) management has made acommitment to NELAC involvement. This paper discusses the MWL experience withNELAC and the level of effort required for NELAP accreditation. Also discussedare the questions: will NELAC improve the quality of laboratory data; and isnational accreditation good for drinking water laboratories as well as for thedata users.
