Development of Methods for the Detection of Human Microsporidia Spores in Model and Natural Waters Using Filtration/Elution, Flow Cytometry (FC), Immunomagnetic Separation (IMS) and Continuous Flow Centrifugation (CFC)
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2000

Document Format: PDF

Description

Little is known about the distribution of the human microsporidia in the aquaticenvironment; even less is understood about the response of these microorganisms to physical or chemical water treatment; hence the risks of infectious disease to humans remains poorly characterized. This study represents the preliminary work of several laboratories to develop practical methods for the recovery of microsporidia from natural waters to facilitate surveillance studies which will make it possibleto determine the fate, ecology, and distribution of these microorganisms in natural and treated water. A combination of research techniques, including filtration/elution, immunomagnetic separation, cell culture, and flow cytometry were investigated.
