The Draft UV Guidance Manual – Development of Validation Procedures
Conference Proceeding by American Water Works Association, 01/01/2001

Document Format: PDF

Description

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is currently drafting a UV Guidance Manual that will include the validation protocol, dose tables, and guidance for design and implementation. This paper discusses the motivations and approach to ultraviolet (UV) reactor validation. UV reactor validation confirms the inactivation and dose delivery of the UV reactor as indicated by its dose monitoring system. Dose delivery is measured using biodosimetry and quantified as a Reduction Equivalent Dose (RED). The RED is measured under various conditions of flowrate, lamp power, and water UV absorbance. To use validation data, the installed reactor must match validated reactor as defined in the documentation. All UV reactors will be equipped with a dose monitoring system using UV intensity and flowrate, potentially with some combination of UV transmittance and dose algorithms. While UV reactor validation is an established practice, several issues exist including interpretation of bioassay results given the reactor’s dose distribution, differences in UV intensity sensor design with different UV manufacturers, and analytical complexities associated with polychromatic systems. The EPA UV Guidance manual will include a UV reactor validation protocol that will use current validation protocols as a foundation, and provide guidance for resolving issues identified with validation. Includes 5 references, table, figures.
